August Foodie Pen Pal Reveal + Free Lunch

The Lean Green Bean

July was the first month that I participated in the Foodie Pen Pal program and it was such a wonderful experience that I felt compelled to do it again. I felt for sure that I wouldn’t get as lucky the 2nd time around…. you know, kind of like beginner’s luck. Let me tell ya, I must be on a lucky streak because this months pen pal was just as awesome!! When it comes to foodie pen pals, I have gotten the creme of the crop!!!

If you are unfamiliar with the Foodie Pen Pal program, let me tell ya more about…….. right after I share the box of goodies that I received this month!!

Katie over at Coffee Lovers Dilemma did a fantastic job picking out items that were perfectly matched to my tastes. Check out what I got!!!

The chocolate covered pomegranate and blueberries were OH.SO.GOOD!!! Sadly, they did not survive the Texas heat but that was no biggie. I popped the little packages in the fridge and went to town on them a couple hours later. Yeah…..these didn’t last in my house past a day. I want to ask where she bought them but I am afraid they might become a new addiction if I know where to get them.

My new love for steel cut oats….yep, I have Katie to thank for that, too!! I am so very happy that she sent me the package because otherwise, I probably never would have tried them and would have been missing out in a big way. You know what goes perfect in the steel cut oats? That’s right, PB2, baby :-)!!

Thanks again, Katie!!! I loved it all!

Yesterday’s Sweaty Girl Workout was a good one if I do say so myself!! It definitely stood by it’s name and left me a sweaty girl ;-)! I ended up doing the circuit two times through which took about 15 minutes or so. Not only did I work up a sweat but I also worked up a big appetite!!

Since it was Thursday, I loaded up my little lunch date and headed to Honey Bee Ham for a free lunch. Well, free lunch for the kiddo, at least! On Thursday, kids eat free with an adult meal purchase and I am all about saving a little extra $moolah$!! Besides, they have the most delicious wrap and I have been craving it week long.

I could eat this every day for a week and not get tired of it!! That says a lot because I usually need some variety in my meals. This is seriously just SO good. Probably not so good for my waist line though. Darn it!!

After we were finished with lunch, we made Target our next stop. I had some coupons that were about to expire so I wanted to use them to get some great deals. Remember…. I love to save $$$!! Honestly, I am not much of a coupon-er because of the time commitment but I had received a bunch of coupons flyers in the mail from Target and since you can use their coupons along with the ones from manufacturers, you can save pretty big. My total before coupons was $59.00 and after it was only $37.00. I was one happy momma!!

Of course, we had to make a pit stop to the toy department while we were there. That is where I ran into the Incredible Hulk. Yikes….in the middle of Target. That is just, uh……incredible!!

I believe I may be in need of a facial.  My skin has been feeling a bit…..scaley!! Yes, I am just a big ol’ nerd 😉

And to finish up my day(night) I headed to the gym around 8pm for a little more cardio.

  • 20 minute intervals on the step mill
  • 10 minutes treadmill intervals

It sure felt good to get in two sweat sessions today!!

Do you use coupons? All the time or just when it is convenient?

Who was your favorite comic book superhero as a kid? Mine was always the Incredible Hulk!!

I’m a Lucky Girl

Look what my husband surprised me with yesterday!!

I have been in the market for a new camera for some time now but had not been able to find one that met all my needs and wants. While I had been very interested in a DSLR, I wasn’t completely sold on it because of the size and the price. While I love taking pictures, I don’t have any aspirations of becoming a professional photographer. I will leave that to the very talented ones that I know! However, I do want to be able to capture some good quality pics for my blog and of my family.

After doing some research, I am pretty sure I found “the one”! The Canon G12 offers many of the same features of a DSLR but in a more compact size and it is easier to use. I am SO VERY EXCITED to start playing around with it later this morning.

I really am a lucky girl to have such a sweet and thoughtful hubby!!!

Since today is going to be a busy one for me….full of errands, homework, cheer practice, ect I decided to come up with a quick cardio workout that would get my heart rate up and cause a good sweat without taking up too much time. I love circuits like this because you can tailor them to fit into your workout time frame. If you are super short on time, do it once through in the morning and again in the evening. If you have more time to spare, 3 times through will give you a nice little calorie burn!

Since Camryn has cheer practice for an hour tonight, I hope to get in a walk/jog while I am waiting on her to finish up but I certainly won’t complain about getting in an extra workout!!

Hope y’all have a wonderful Friday Eve!!!

What is your favorite way to workout when you are short on time?

What kind of camera do you most often use? Camera phone, compact or DSLR?

WIAW #11

Good Morning!! I hope this Wednesday morning is treating you well. 🙂

I can hardly believe we are already half way through the week. At least that is how I am going to look at it rather than, I can hardly believe we are only half way through the week. I am all about the bright side today, people!!

You know what the best part about today is……It’s time for another WHAT I ATE WEDNESDAY post!! I am pretty much thrilled with my food choices yesterday. They were all super delicious and pretty darn healthy on top of that. My goal is to eat like this most days of the week and leave the true splurges for the weekend, or fun lunch dates with the hubby or friends!!

Breakfast: I have found a new breakfast love in steel cut oats. On Monday morning I made a big enough batch to carry me over until the end of the week. I love having breakfast ready to go, especially one that is as healthy and filling as this!! Steel cut oats+sliced banana+PB2=Delicious!!

Lunch: Another winner of a meal! Last weekend I stocked up on salad goodies for my lunches this week. I haven’t been eating many salads because I never have enough toppings to make them substantial and filling enough. Not a problem anymore!! I got all kinds of stuff to make up incredible tasting salads. This one included a mix of:

  • romaine and spinach
  • baby red and orange bell peppers
  • cherry tomatoes
  • roasted edamame
  • a couple slices of turkey bacon
  • feta cheese
  • 4 whole wheat crackers

Anyone who says salads are boring, obviously hasn’t had one like this!!

I also ate a greek yogurt on the side for a little extra protein….and sweetness.

Snack: I stole this snack idea from Tina at Carrots and Cake. A sliced banana topped with nut butter (I used peanut butter.) She eats this often and each time I tell myself I need to remember to include it in my meals for the day.  I tweaked it a bit and added a touch of coconut and a teensy amount of Quaker Oat Square crumbs.  Simple but so very good!!

Dinner: Since we were having chicken for dinner and it can be quite boring, I went to an old recipe that I used to make quite often to liven it up a bit. It was superb and I know this because my daughter ate a full serving of chicken and asked for more. Normally, I can only get her to take one bite of chicken before she declares she is a vegetarian. Ha!!

Honey Balsamic Chicken, roasted red potatoes and green beans made a mighty fine dinner!!

And finally….DESSERT

A single serving brownie(No Pudge is amazing!!!) topped with a tablespoon of Chobani Vanilla Chocolate Chunk. Perfect!!!

Thanks to Jenn at Peas and Crayons for hosting yet another(and many more to come), What I Ate Wednesday!!

Tuesday Workout: 2.25 run/walk around my very hilly neighborhood.

I finished in about 25 minutes but I will take it because my legs were SO.VERY.SORE. I thought the activity would help to reduce the DOMS(delayed onset muscle soreness) but I swear they hurt even worse when I was done. All I can say is thank goodness for scalding hot baths!!!

Wednesday Workout: Since I am unable to get to the gym today, I am going to do one of my fave home exercise videos, Strengthen and Tone by Brooke Burke. It is a great workout for getting in some light weight work and a combination of cardio. I think I will save the heavier lifting for later in the week. Besides, I think it is important to include a day of higher reps/lighter weights into your weight lifting routine to keep your body guessing!!

What are some of your favorite salad toppings?

How do you treat DOMS after an intense workout? Rest days, medication, ect?

Remember yesterday how I said I couldn’t wait to be sore after getting back in the gym and hitting the heavy weights? I think I may have to take back that statement!!

True, my aching body is letting me know that I got in a good workout but I don’t know how much I am enjoying it. This is the kind of sore where it hurts to put on a shirt, get off the toilet or even type up a blog post. OUCH!!! As much as I have been looking forward to a Zumba class tonight, a couple mile walk around the neighborhood may be in order instead. I think my poor legs are going to need a day to rest.

What can I say, I was hoping to feel the burn and this workout certainly did it for me!!

In other news, I made a rash decision to color my hair yesterday. With box color. I know a lot of people use over the counter hair color and I have done it before as well with mixed results. Once I went WAY too dark and the color totally washed me out(a quick trip to the salon fixed that) but I have had successes with it as well. Yesterday when I went to the store I picked the SAME color I have used before, the one that previously turned out really well.

Somehow, the results weren’t quite the same this time. Granted, I had some blonde highlights in my hair from attempting to do an Ombre style earlier this year but that was a good 6 months ago. Well, apparently the blonde highlights weren’t fond of the box color because they turned red instead of the brown I was expecting.  It isn’t awful, at least in pictures but it  definitely isn’t my favorite color.

I tried to get a picture in the best light possible so that you could see the reddish tone but I am not sure I was able to capture it very well. Oh well, it isn’t anything a couple months of fading won’t take care of. After all, it is only hair!! However, I think I have learned my lesson and will stick with letting my hair lady take care of me from now on!! 🙂

For anyone in the Gulf Coast area, be sure to stay safe and take precautions for Hurricane Isaac. My best friend in Baton Rouge may be getting the brunt of it, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that it does not cause too much damage. Mother Nature can be quite the “B” sometimes!!! 😉

Have you ever had a hair fail? Did you live with it or have it fixed as quickly as you could?
