I am posting this a little bit late but I just found out yesterday that this week is “National Exercise With Your Child” week. Not to worry, you still have plenty of time to get active this week!
I feel like the best way to instill a love of exercise in your children is to be active yourself. My kids love to join in exercising with me when I am working out at home! I don’t always enjoy it because I view that as “me” time but I try not to discourage it because I know how good it is for them!
My children are very different when it comes to their athletic capabilities. My son is naturally athletic and loves to run, jump and climb. He would rather be outside than any other place. My daughter on the other hand would rather be on the computer or doing some sort of arts and crafts activity. My point is that being active comes more naturally to my son so I have to work with my daughter on it. I don’t care so much about how athletic she is(we can’t all be awesome at sports) but I do care that I instill the habit of being active and healthy into her.
Here are some fun activities that we do together to stay active all year round:
- Jumping on the trampoline
- Swimming(in the Summertime)
- Riding Bikes and scooters
- Family Walks or jogs
- Play time at the park
- Freeze tag
- Jumping Rope
- Hop scotch
- Dance parties
These are just some of our favorites but there are MANY more. All you have to do is be creative and willing to move a little and the entire family can make exercise a fun part of your every day life!!
What I Ate Wednesday #8
I got a late start to breakfast yesterday, eating at almost 10am. I normally eat closer to 8 or 8:30 but I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to go to the gym or get in a home workout. I decided on a home workout and by the time I finished, it was later than normal. I would rather exercise on an empty tummy than a full one!!
I grabbed a quick bowl of honey nut cheerios and a juicy and sweet nectarine.
I inhaled this snack because I was starving from 1.) eating a smaller than normal(no protein) breakfast 2.) swimming at the pool for an hour in the heat 3.) it was eaten later than I normally have my lunch
It isn’t something I like to eat regularly but hey, it filled my belly while I fixed a much healthier lunch!
Lunch was soooo good and filled my belly nicely!! It was probably so delicious because I was starving and let’s face it, that makes ANY food taste pretty darn good. This really was good though. One egg and one white, a piece of lightly buttered toast and kale chips.
An hour or so after my lunch I started craving something sweet but didn’t want something too unhealthy because I knew we would be having a “treat” meal for dinner. I decided on a strawberry banana Chobani and it hit the spot. Creamy and cold with just a touch of sweetness!
That treat meal I was talking about…..here it is!!!
Half a hamburger along with a few tator tots and a few sneaked sips of my mom’s peach malt. 😉 My mom is a lover of all things milk shake/malts and we have a pretty awesome place called “The Malt Shop” down the road from us so we treated her(and ourselves) to dinner there. The hamburger was pretty huge so I only ate half and that had me STUFFED!! How my mom and my husband managed to down a malt along with their dinner I will never know!! Meals like this are when the “Naturally Thin” rules really come in handy!!
As a kid, were your parents active and did this influence how active you were as a kid? I remember my mom doing Richard Simmons videos all the time…ha!!
